Millicent Marie Is Not My Name by Karen Pokras Toz

Millicent Marie Is Not My NameMillicent Marie Is Not My Name by Karen Pokras Toz
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? How well did the author execute these themes? To this reader this book has two main themes and one secondary. The main theme is bullying and how it hurts everyone, including the person bullying others. The other main theme is gossip. Yes, we as humans love gossip. Does not matter who the information is about (as long as it is not us) we all love it. Almost everyone will share gossip and when sharing the gossip we all add something.

The secondary theme is secrets. Secrets are something everyone has, however some secrets require actions that may possibly hurt others.

Describe 2 different settings or locations. I enjoyed reading Natalie helping Millicent pick out a new shirt. Millicent is one of those people (strange for a teenager) that enjoys the neutral colors. Natalie is trying to get Millicent to try on a purple shirt. According to Millicent the color is too bright. Millicent reminds me of a classmate from secondary school. Always one to wear something that does not stand out, when some bright colors would create a more vibrant personality.

Were you able to connect with the main character and why? Millicent Marie is easy to connect with. She talks about how she does not like her name, wishing she was given a different name (Amanda) at birth. I would like to read additional books with this character to see if she ever accepts her name. I wonder how Toz would create a book with challenges where Millicent accepts her name. Would be an interesting read.

Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? The ending was the best. Everyone was happy, all the characters learned a valuable lesson. Something that any age reader can relate to and learn from.

Why would you recommend or not recommend this book?  Perfect reading for any secondary reader allowing them to learn some very valuable lessons.
