Review - Gastien Part 1 by Caddy Rowlands

Gastien Part 1: The Cost of the DreamGastien Part 1: The Cost of the Dream by Caddy Rowland
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? In a way, this book was about becoming an adult and the challenges faced by someone who perseveres to follow his dreams.

Describe 2 different settings or locations. One - Then he whispered, “Use the brush like you used your other tool last night. Master it. Make it speak for you, create for you.” Throughout the book, the author's writes in a poetic / smooth manner.

Two - "His meal was eaten while he sat on the sand, watching darkness fall over the water." The setting is so peaceful and yet Gastien faces so much turmoil in his life, I really liked the contrast in this scene.

Were you able to connect with the main character and why? Definitely. Although it is in a different era and the relationships are also slightly different, Gastien's emotions are easy to relate to.

Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? Without a doubt, the conclusion. And now I can't wait to read the next part in the series.

Why would you recommend or not recommend this book? Yes, I would definitely recommend this book just for her writing style alone.

Rise of the Retics - T.J. Lantz

Rise of the Retics (Rosehaven the Hidden City, #1)Rise of the Retics by T.J. Lantz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? Death, corruption and kindness. Tyranna Wolfskin goes from privileged to hunted and she soon finds out what the "retics" feel like. This reader really liked the play on emotions, it almost made the retics human.

Describe 2 different settings or locations. One - "Jaxon paused a moment for more emphasis and then said with a proud flourish, “I’m a demon.” ... Tyranna makes one discovery after another in this book and she learns a lot about what is actually happening around her and about herself.

Two - "He had found her when she was a puppy - beaten, starved, and left to die in one of the city’s back alleys. He had spent weeks nursing her back to health." Kindness to others was a strong theme in this book and this reader liked how the author worked it into the story.

Were you able to connect with the main character and why? Definitely. Tyranna's discoveries allowed the reader to share her experiences.

Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? Definitely the ending. All the smaller sections and the build up of each character falls into place very nicely at the ending.

Why would you recommend or not recommend this book? Yes, I would recommend this book. It's a YA read that I enjoyed and the characters were extremely entertaining.

Sierra by Taylor Dean

SierraSierra by Taylor Dean
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? How well did the author execute these themes? I think the central theme for this book is self-esteem. John Smith (can't believe that he really had such a plain name) is a simple soul who meets with "complicated" at a street corner and things go in all directions but good after that.

Describe 2 different settings or locations. One - "Sam, there’s one thing I’ve learned from all of this and that is, life is short, life is tender. It can be taken away in the blink of an eye." The background of this conversation was simple but really tug at you.

Two - "As their laughter faded and they sobered, Alex told her, “It’s not over." This signifies the beginning of something new for Alyssa, and you want to feel happy for her but as the story hasn't ended you keep turning the pages to see if you have guessed the ending correctly.

Were you able to connect with the main character and why? Definitely. Alyssa comes across as someone who depicts strength under all circumstances.

Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? Definitely the ending. The build up to the ending was just splendid.

Why would you recommend or not recommend this book? Yes, I would recommend this book. It's a riveting story that will capture your heart.

Review - It's Just Lola by Dixianne Hallaj

It's Just LolaIt's Just Lola by Dixiane Hallaj
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? How well did the author execute these themes? The main themes were relationships, family and personal growth. The book teaches you that hardship will come and go but you will always have yourself to rely on.

Describe 2 different settings or locations. One - This was the most heartbreaking of all. "By night she huddled with her children and they shared body
warmth. “Decency be damned,” she said to Estelle, “we aren’t made for
this weather and we can’t be shivering all night.”

Two - “Thank you for your kindness. I’ll be all right now.” “I’ll stay a little longer.” .... I'll stay a little longer. How many of us walk pass people who truly need our help?

Were you able to connect with the main character and why? On many different levels, Lola is every woman. She is mother, warrior, friend and a pillar of strength. She conceals so much of her troubles. I would have been honoured to meet her

Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion? I'm a bit torn on this. Each were brilliant in their own way and if I had to pick one, I would pick the introduction just because of the writing style.

Why would you recommend or not recommend this book? Yes, I will definitely recommend this book.

Review: The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy by Suzanne de Montigny

The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy (The Shadow of the Unicorn, #1)The Shadow of the Unicorn: The Legacy by Suzanne de Montigny
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

1. What were the main themes of the book? How well did the author execute these themes?

All themes are not shown at the beginning which makes this an interesting read. Readers are introduced to changes that play a major part in the story. Then the author introduces dishonesty and voracity.

2. Describe 2 different settings or locations.

One of my favourites is Azaria moving around without sound. He is actually showing the unicorns what he learned from Darius. How to move like the wind, be one with his shadow, and being one with their surrounds.

This one is sad - Darius seeing all the unicorns moving up the mountain wondering and wanting to go with them. He tells himself that it is better to let them leave while he goes off by himself.

3. Were you able to connect with the main character and why?

The main character Azaria easily grabs the reader’s attention. He is strong, likeable, and always tries to do what is right.

4. Which did you find more appealing, the introduction or the conclusion?

I prefer the conclusion. It ended with the changes I expected. However sad, with the unicorns & Darius going separate ways. Learning that change is the only thing anyone can count on.

5. Why would you recommend or not recommend this book?

This book is great for anyone. It shows how voracity, change and dishonesty effects everyone. To this reader, the author is showing that although change is inedible it happens no matter what.
