Author Interview – River Maria Urke

What genre are you most comfortable writing? I love to write poetry. I primarily write free verse but occasionally I will write a Villenelle or Haiku.

What inspired you to write your first book? I was inspired by people’s reactions to the poems I published on MS sites. I wrote them to cope and heal for myself and then, I found out they did the same for others. So, I brainstormed and gathered a chapbook worth of poems and essays for people with MS and their loved ones. Stumbled & Standing: from Diagnosis to Acceptance- A Woman’s Journey with Multiple Sclerosis

What is your greatest strength as a writer? My greatest strength as a writer is drawing people in with imagery.

What genres do you write? Poetry, children’s, fiction, and non-fiction. I have either published in a genre or have a book started in one.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? Yes, of course. I will look through photos on Google Images until one sparks a few words. Then I will write a poem to it. That usually breaks my block.

Can we expect any more books from you in the future? Oh yes….many more through the years to come from poetry to novel.

Have you started another book yet? Yes, I am working on my first full-length poetry book, Spirit Songs. There is a coming of age novel and a children’s chapter book. I can’t forget that I am collecting shoe stories when they come my way too.

A shoe lover’s book.

~Women’s Obsession with Shoes is a collection of twenty-one stories from women about their lives told through a pair of shoes. The stories range from a lost pair of moccasins at a Pow Wow to a six-foot woman making a claim on a man’s chest in stiletto boot. Every story about a pair of shoes is told in a woman’s voice as if you were sitting next to her as she told her story. Some of the stories will spark memories while others will merely be entertaining in their own way.
